Définition

The consolidation of companies either by their joining (merging) together or by one acquiring the other.

Description

A merger is a combination of two companies to form a new company, while an acquisition is the purchase of one company by another with no new company being formed.

Mergers and acquisitions occur increasingly across national borders, thus constituting an important form of foreign direct investment.
