A measure involving reduced exposure of domestic producers to the international market, usually by means of government instituted tariffs, subsidies, voluntary restraint arrangements and other non-tariff measures.

"Protectionist measures can include tariffs, quotas or more subtle regulatory measures. Often, if these measures are not transparent, economists consider them to be a form of disguised protectionism."
