Définition

A worker who is directly linked to the production process and who usually performs unskilled, manual routine work which involves relatively simple duties that can be learned within a short period of time and do not require substantial judgment or special skills.

Description

"Examples of unskilled workers are factory worker's assistant or a worker who performs assembly activities."
(Termium, Unskilled Worker, visited 2011-01-21)

While most sources refer to an "unskilled worker" as being an employee engaged in manual occupations, without having undergone any long-term training or apprenticeship, others define the term more broadly as any worker (labourer or not) with no education related to his or her work. This definition would include, for example, non-manual workers who have learned a non-complex job in a short period of time, like some clerical staff. This broader view of the "unskilled worker" appears in recent publications.
(adapted from Beynon, R. The Routledge Critical Dictionary of Global Economics, New York: Routledge, 1999)

The unskilled worker is the lowest category of worker in the industrial hierarchy. Indeed, the "unskilled worker" is below both the "semi-skilled worker" and the "skilled worker."
