Définition

"The continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workers and their families as well as of the local community and society at large."
(Holme, R. and P. Watts, Corporate and Social Responsibility: Making Good Business Sense, World Business Council for Sustainable Development, 2000, visited 2009-06-11)

Contexte

"Indexes of social and environmental performance are becoming significant market factors in screening for good citizenship and corporate social responsibility. These indexes drop companies that fail to meet social responsibility standards. With pro-environmental shareholders entering into dialogue with decision makers, corporate behaviour on the environment can be steered towards a direction that can meet the needs and demands of the global public and civil society."
(B.I.O E-library, Corporate Social Responsibility, visited 2009-06-11)

Description

"There is no doubt that development and implementation of effective and practical approaches to ensure that firms operate in an economically, environmentally, and socially responsible manner presents a daunting challenge. On the one hand, as the COPOLCO (Committee on Consumer Policy ) Working Group Report on the Desirability and Feasibility of ISO Corporate Social Responsibility Standards describe, there is evidence of increasing support around the world – from the consumers, shareholders and investors, the general public, businesses, governments, civil society organizations and others – for the proposition that firms should behave in a way reflective of the "triple bottom line" of economic, social, and environmental performance, wherever they operate."
