Strategic alliance

A contractual agreement between companies for the purpose of achieving cost efficiencies or other strategic advantages.

Strategic alliances may be with suppliers, distributors, competitors, research organizations. They make take the form of joint ventures, government-industry partnerships or consortia.

If no contract is involved, the term collaboration is used.
